Why The AIG Bonuses MatterPaul Krugman explains the situation perfectly today. At every stage, Geithner et al have made it clear that they still have faith in the people who created the financial crisis — that they believe that all we have is a liquidity crisis that can be undone with a bit of financial engineering, that “governments do a bad job of running banks” (as opposed, presumably, to the wonderful job the private bankers have done), that financial bailouts and guarantees should come with no strings attached. This was bad analysis, bad policy, and terrible politics. This administration, elected on the promise of change, has already managed, in an astonishingly short time, to create the impression that it’s owned by the wheeler-dealers. And that leaves it with no ability to counter crude populism. March 17, 2009, at 10:41 AM ETIt's not the bonuses. It's that AIG's counterparties are getting paid back in full. Everybody is rushing to condemn AIG's bonuses, but this simple scandal is obscuring the real disgrace at the insurance giant: Why are AIG's counterparties getting paid back in full, to the tune of tens of billions of taxpayer dollars?Forthe answer to this question, we need to go back to the very firstdecision to bail out AIG, made, we are told, by then-Treasury SecretaryHenry Paulson, then-New York Fed official Timothy Geithner, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last fall.AIG救済を決めた昨秋、その会議の顔ぶれは、Hポールソン、ガイトナー、GSのCEOロイド、そしてバーナンキ、Post-Lehman'scollapse, they feared a systemic failure could be triggered by AIG'sinability to pay the counterparties to all the sophisticatedinstruments AIG had sold. And who were AIG's trading partners? No shockhere: Goldman, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, UBS, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, and on it goes.リーマンの惨状から、AIGを通して銀行を救済する仕組みを考える、(銀行はおなじみのところーー、)So now we know for sure what we already surmised: The AIG bailout has been a way to hide an enormous second round of cash to the same group that had received TARP money already. It all appears, once again, to be the same insiders protecting themselves against sharing the pain and risk of their own bad adventure... *GSのCEOロイドはこちら、the company made roughly $4.7 billion in profit from shorting AIG alone!
