" Blah, Blah, Blah... "
Intelligent and Brazenly Dark Comedy. HURLYBURLY: Black comedy. Based on the play by David Rabe, and directed by Anthony Drazen, "Hurlyburly" may easily be in contention as one of the most intelligent and brazenly dark comedies of the year. Sean Penn, who has given up acting more times than Elizabeth Taylor has ex-husbands, evokes a brilliant performance that should undoubtedly garner him an Oscar nod. Penn, as Eddie, is a motor-mouthed casting director living in the Hollywood Hills with his roommate and business associate Mickey (Kevin Spacey). Permanently Mickey, who is too cool for yule (even under the influence of drugs ) calmly notes that Eddie gave him permission to sleep with her when he declared this was a "free country ". Thrown into the mix is Eddie's best friend, Phil (Chazz Palminteri ), a moronic would-be-actor with thugish tendencies and an inordinate sense of loyalty and devotion to his friends (not to his wife, of course, who he beats on a regular basis ). There's also Artie (Gary Shandling ), another Hollywood player who shares their drugs and is kind enough to "give " the boys a vapid young starlet (Anna Paquin as Donna ) he met in an elevator one afternoon. Like everything in life, nothing lasts forever. This strange mix of drugs, anger, power and male bonding eventually leads Eddie and Phil into places that are not necessarily unpredictable. Some of the best (and chilling) performances of the year all around. Co-starring Meg Ryan. Rated R. 【Meg Ryan】Hurlyburly【Kevin Spacey】 Entertaining, but don't Read too much into it... The title of "Hurlyburly " is an allusion to Macbeth ; but more than that it is the suggestion of chaos. Not physical chaos, but mental and emotional chaos. This film takes the term tempestuous and stretches it beyond the bounds of sanity. This was a movie about seeking. Everyone in the film was searching for something, they each had some hole in their lives and were looking for whatever means were necessary to fill it. It wasn't an exciting film, it wasn't an action film. It was a very thoughtful, literate movie. Most of the action, as it were, took place in conversations between Penn and various other characters that inevitably lead to paranoia induced arguements about some minor detail or another. As I'm sitting here writing about this, I'm having a hard time describing this film. It's not an easy one to break down in a thousand words or so, but it's one that should be seen. As this movie goes on, Sean Penn has to deal with finding , losing , and almost falling apart when he has to face death. There is a lot of drug use in this movie, but unlike the suggestions I've seen in other... I thought it was tangental, just a result of Penn's state of mind rather than the cause of any of the neurotic behavior. It's a funny, engaging movie with an excellent cast that delivers top-notch performances. Part of the fun is the casting--Garry Shandling as a drug addict Meg Ryan as an exotic dancer Anna Paquin as a loose teenager "Hurlyburly " is one of the independent films that has paved the way for more commercially acceptable quality films like "American Beauty ", which has a similar feel. No flash, special effects, blood and violence, no nudity or sexual explitives and what do you get ? A movie about the realistic thought patterns and cycles induced by hallucinagetic drug abuse. A brilliant movie that explored the true sense of self and "his " relation to the world, others and most painfully your own SELF. Acting was superb and the movie was excellent 5 stars, no doubt. To all of the people who HATE this movie, Learn to listen and try not to understand. If you like to think, and you're intrigued by human relationships in a modern world, then you won't be disappointed if you check this one out. This is a Dark & Powerful film, and I can't Recommend it Highly enough. お気に入りの記事を「いいね!」で応援しよう
