"Hope is a Dangerous Thing"

Andy Dufresne is a simple married man who works as a banker.
One night he catches his wife in the arms of another.
To remedy the situation he resorts to heavy drinking and plotting to do something drastic, carrying a handgun and wallowing in sorrow.
When his wife and lover get shot and killed, Andy is the Primary suspect and he is convicted of murder and sentenced to back to back life sentences at Shawshank Prison......

There he tries to keep low key and to himself, but as time goes on he feels the need to be needed and respected as a man.
He tries to be one of the guys while working and cutting a deal with one of the guards to give his cell mates some beer , and he befriedns Red, a lifelong criminal who killed someone when he was young and foolish, the man who can get any item from the outside for the right price.
Red is skeptical about Andy's ability to survive the system from the beginning, but as their friendship grows bigger he knows Andy is strong minded and can turn this negative experience into a positive.

Andy's skills as a banker/money man are very intriguing to the Warden.
The warden soon uses Andy as the prison banker and financial analyst.
He soon does all the books and pension plans of the entire prison.
The warden is also involved in a money laundering scheme and he uses the smarts of Andy for much needed work for little reward.
When a prisoner, Tommy is transferred to Shawshank we find out that he knows the identity of Andy's spouse and lover's real killer.
Andy tries to use this opportunity to tell the warden for possibility of freedom from Shawshank, but the warden's greed and need are too great and he takes care of the matter himself, keeping Andy at Shawshank.
After 19 years in prison we see Andy's desperation and the desire for him to try and escape, despite warnings and advice from his friends to the contrary.

Andy's dream is to enjoy the warm sun of the Mexican coast with his friend Red, a dream that Red considers a fantasy but Andy is determined to fulfill it.
Im not at liberty to discuss any more of the plot as I don't want to ruin in for those who haven't seen it, but as mentioned it's rewarding and liberating, a real joy to watch.

At first, Andy stays to himself in prison as he is still in shock that this happened to him.
Finally he decides to talk to Red, another convicted murderer and the "only guilty man in Shawshank ", and ask him to get him a rock hammer.
Red is the "man that knows how to get things ".
This starts off a friendship that gets stronger as time goes on and lasts the whole movie.
Red is the one that warned Andy about Boggs.
He is the leader of a small group of guys that "can be a friend to you ", but not the kind of friend that Andy wants.
Boggs tried to, and often did, rape and beat the first two years Andy was in Prison.

While doing special outdoor duty tarring the license plate factory roof, Andy earns the help of the Officer Hadley, Captain of the guards.
While Andy is recovering from a sever beating at the hands of Boggs, Hadley beats Boggs so severly that he is never known to walk again.
Boggs is transfered to a minimum security prison and we never see him again.
Andy gets noticed by the Warden thanks to Hadley and starts handling the taxes of all of the guards in Shawshank and finally other prisons as well.
He also ends up laundering money for the Warden as he "knows where the cracks are " in the system.

While doing these things for the Warden, Andy is allowed to build a library and help some of the men get their high school diplomas.
One such man is Tommy.
He comes to the prison after getting caught breaking and entering.
Tommy had done some time in another prison and was a roommate to a man, Elmo Blatch, bragging about killing the wife of a banker and her lover and the husband getting the blame.
When Tommy tells Andy, he goes to the Warden to see about getting a trial.
The Warden tries to convince Andy that Tommy is lying and they end up arguing.
Andy ends up in "the hole " for a month.
While he is there, the Warden has Tommy killed, but makes it look like a prison escape gone wrong.

Andy knows better.
When he gets out of the hole, after a total of two months, as the Warden added on a second when Andy refused to keep up the money laundering, he has changed.
He wants out.
Now.
Everyone thinks he is going to kill himself instead of escape.
He had been using the rock hammer for almost 20 years digging a hole though the wall of his cell.
He was hiding it behind a large poster.
He does escape, and not only that, manages to take the records kept in the safe of the Warden.

These serve two purposes.
One is to clean out the bank accounts of the Warden with all of the money that Andy had been helping him launder all of those years.
The other is to send the records to the press and get Shawshank investigated for corruption and murder.
This is mainly what happens in the story.
There are other characters in the story also that you really get to know that I have not included.

Im sure I will already hear about how long this diary is without them, but they help make the movie.
I really enjoy this movie each time I watch it.
I really like Tim Robbins in this part.
He really seemed to fit the roll.
Morgan Freeman is also excellent in his part.
The seasoned criminal doing him time and waiting for his next parole rejection.
