Nowadays, when a movie gets an NC-17 rating, it usually means very few people actually get a chance to see it and most of the public write it off as being "racy " and no one ever considers it great.

It is perhaps important to understand the history behind this story.
Miller was the author of Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer.
Novels so scandalous in their time that they were banned until after the author's death.
It is fitting then that the first film with this explicit rating was a biography of a man who in some ways fathered the genre of eroticism.
The problem here is that the rating instantly grabbed a connotation of explicit sexuality.
The belief that NC-17 means pornography has turned many away from this cinematic masterpiece.

Without getting into an argument about the difference between pornography and eroticism, I think its necessary to point out that Henry & June hardly qualifies as either.
Were Im porn fan who purchased the movie unaware of its subject matter and based purely on the rating, I believe I would be sorely disappointed.
The nudity in the film is comparable to what might be found in many R rated movies.
The depiction of sex is anything but hardcore.

Make no mistake though, "Henry & June" is about sex.
Kaufman has done a superb job of telling the tale of two people who have found their genius and their sexuality completely intertwined though their lust for each other and their love for their spouses.
This is a brilliant character study on the mind of the writer.
An age old adage says that the writer must draw from his experience.
Nin and Miller wrote of depravity, sexuality and the sensuality of Miller's wife June, and thus they were forced to completely immerse themselves, mind, body and soul, in these topics.
Kaufman, with the help of his cast (Fred Ward, Maria de Mederios and Uma Thurman ) takes us into this world without resorting to obscenity or cheap titilation.
He does this through strong character development, intense acting, brilliant direction and absolutely stunning camera work.
To watch the film is to be lost in a depraved world totally unlike the one most of us live in and yet so seemingly real... so beautiful that we as viewers may never wish to leave.

Is this a Failure as a Porno or a Brilliant Work of Art
This movie is definitely for one who revels in secret pleasures, and not-so hidden desires.. I will say that this movie is NOT for the easily offended.. This is a movie about sex.. If you can't handle that, then don't watch it.. Based on the diary of erotic writer Anais Nin, I found the movie Henry and June to be very sensual, and very realistic.. It gave me the feeling of being a voyeur, spying on the life of this incredibly confused woman, and knowing it's based on factual events made this movie even more alluring.....

Henry and June is a movie about the growth of Anais, as a person, and as a sexual being.
The triangle that ensues between Anais, author Henry Miller, and Henry's equally confused wife, June (played very well by Uma Thruman ) is equal to that you'd find in any soap opera.
More fun is that everyone (including Anais' husband, Hugo, although he never truly lets on ) knows what is going on, and no one says a word.
They just go on with their regular lives.
We see the normal progression of any relationship, from the hot and steamy first moments of the affair, to the time when it fizzles out.

I will say that compared to Anais' writings, this movie was a bit tame (which is a rather odd thing to say, considering this movie saw the first NC-17 rating ), but you'd have to compare them for yourself.
I really don't know another movie to compare this to, because no other movie I've seen handles this subject.
Interesting, intriguing, almost shameful to watch at times, this movie will captivate.
Throughout the affair of Nin and Miller, they manage to write gr8 works ; the film is set during the time Miller wrote one of his classic books, Tropic of Cancer. Another great scene is where Nin and Miller critique each other's work.
Very funny !!!!!

The sex scenes are beautiful and artistic.
Extremely done in good taste , but keeping that very erotic edge at the same time.
The most erotic and hot scene, in my opinion, is when Nin and her husband go to a brothel and watch two female prostitutes have sex. !!!! Wow !!!!
The cinematography is dark mostly, with earth tones making very sensuous looking photography.
The costumes equally matches the cinematography with nice earth tone colors matching the era.
Please give this film a chance.
Keep an open mind and watch it for what it is, not for what one might fear it would be.
You will not be disappointed.
I give Henry & June my highest possible recommendation.

If you want to get someone in the mood and are a bit shy about doing so this is the movie to rent.
It's dreamy 1930's Paris backdrop, wonderfully sexy cast and fashion, and the sensual story-line will set anyone ready for their own Sexual Awakening !!!!!!!!
