A Food and Culture Lesson...
The Ingredients of Life, Tossed and Sauted.. This is a wonderful movie that is both tasteful and fun. I enjoyed this movie immensely and felt that the director and actors felt very passionate about father-daughter relationships, traditional-modern adjustments, and generation gaps. This movie is not only serious, but has many light and funny scenes sure to put a smile on your face. The title comes from a Chinese Proverb that expresses fond wishes for the continuation of life. But anyway, if Eat Drink Man Woman is remembered for anything,it should be that it showed the film industry (especially American film industry ) how comedy can be derived from everyday quirks, and how we don't always need a comedy that's a series of well-placed one liners. I didn't know what to expect going into this film. Was it going to be a weepy melodrama, or maybe a sensual thriller Of all things, I didn't expect a comedy, but I'm glad to have watched this, heck, I'm ecstatic that I decided to watch this. Beautifully directed, just sentimental enough, and enough twists that will have you falling out of your chair laughing. The acting is wonderful and the story is believable. As an Asian-American, I could honestly feel the emotion and shared by the characters of this film. I felt the story was somewhat toned down a bit so there is not really any shocking situations or scenes. But that's , it's not meant to provoke, just entertain and display family struggles. Im sorry to have to admit that I had trouble initially keeping the three young women straight. I'd hate to have to interpret my difficulty as a manifestation of the "they all look alike " phenomenon that can occur in relation to races other than one's own, but what alarms me is that one bloger asserted that Lee succeeded in introducing the characters so skillfully that "we never have any uncertainties as to who is who! " If its my problem alone, Im duly humiliated. In my defense, I'll only add that I often enjoy movies that have complicated plots and multiple protagonists more thoroughly upon second viewing because of my limitations in sorting out characters. That was the case with this film. 【Chien-Lien Wu】Eat Drink Man Woman【Sihung Lung】 Chinese Food & Love make a good Mix I don't know if this is true for every culture. But food is such an essential part of Chinese culture, and if you don't understand the for food, you don't understand Chinese culture. Ang Lee's film "Eat, drink, man and woman " is a gr8 film to lead you into the common day Chinese family from food. The "eat " is the center thread of the story, and around the family dinner every Sunday, a story about how family members keeping their ties together unravels. In the end, you can get a better understanding how important family relationships are to Chinese. Although "food " and "eat " is the centerpiece of the story, in the end it somehow disappears itself into the story. The more important message you get from the film is although we are all ordinary people that eat and drink everyday, we need something else to survive and triumph. Love. The story revolves at the kitchen and the dinner table where Mr. Chu and his children discuss their problems and decisions in life.. It is so realistic in a sense that we do that too, we often have discussions with a good meal with rice, meat and vegetables.. Chu's oldest daughter, who is a prude, takes on the task of looking after her widowed father.. The second daughter is a successful businesswoman in the airlines business who inherits her father's love for cooking.. The third daughter focuses her life on work and school.. The three children finds love in different ways, which changes the atmosphere at the dinner table.. The father, also finds love, in the most surprising way...... All in all, the movie is a wonderful tapestry of Chinese culture. This is one of the funniest films ever. The first half lets you get accustomed to the family, the way they work and everything. The latter half puts them in hilarious situations. I can definitely relate to neighbors singing karaoke so loudly that it is so annoying. The heart-warming plot doesn't necessarily make this a "chick-flick " however, although I haven't known too many men into this film. Give it a chance, guys. It may not have explosions, special effects, or scantily-clad lifeguards; but it has a deep truth and realistic humor that is worth your while. Ang Lee did an excellent job in this movie and I watching Mr. Chu do the food. It made me crave for some delicious Chinese food. Hope everybody enjoys the story as well as the interesting display of typical Chinese food. We Chinese do eat beautiful looking dishes like that daily. It's not just in film. お気に入りの記事を「いいね!」で応援しよう
