Saturday
Today after work, I went to an award presentation ceremony co-organized by my company and the volunteering centre near my office. The residential area near my office is a newly developed, densely populated area with many public housing estates built by the government for low income families. Since the location is quite far away from the city centre, the transportation fares are high for residents to travel to and fro workplaces and thus many families find it difficult to support their lives by their low salaries. With the improving social welfare provided by the government to those unemployed ones, particularly those with children, many adults there give up working and let the whole family dependent on the social welfare. In addition, many of them have low education background or/and are immigrants from other poor countries, e.g. China, Parkistan, Nepal etc, while some of the families are composed of old local husbands and young immigrated wives, there are many social problems in that isolated community, e.g. inherited poverty of the next generation, unemployment, single parent families, communication problems, kids gangs, difficulties to adapt to the outside world etc.The social centre there is run by a non profit making organization (or non governmental organization "NGO" as we call it) that has limited resources, particularly in recent years when there was economic downturn, which made many sponsors cut budget for its funding. As what the NGO has always promoted, we need to educate the kids there for positive message so that they will work hard for their future, to get out from the poverty and get into the society to contribute instead of being dependents. Therefore, our company co-organized with them a mentoring program where our volunteers guide the kids there along their stages of growth. Today, we had a award presentation ceremony for a reading project where we donated some books to the kids to encourage them to read more.
