Ohio Swine Flu Case Confirmed
9-Year-Old Has 'Mild' Case Of New Influenza Strain

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The swine flu virus that sickened a 9-year-old Ohio boy is the same strain as the one that has killed nearly 100 people in Mexico, an emergency official said Sunday.

Laboratory tests by the Ohio Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case matches the deadly strain, said Lorain County Emergency Management Agency spokesman Clifton Barnes.

Health department spokesman Robert Jennings said the boy has a mild case of the disease and is recovering at his home in Elyria, in northern Ohio's Lorain County. The child's name was not released.

The third-grader visited several Mexican cities while on vacation with his family before ending the trip in Mexico City, Barnes said.

"He went to a fair, he went to a farm, he went to visit family around Mexico," Barnes said.

The boy, who returned from Mexico within the past two weeks, started feeling sick on Wednesday, Barnes said. He was treated for flu symptoms at a city health clinic, where an astute nurse practitioner began asking questions and realized he might have swine flu, Barnes said.

The child attended school from Tuesday through Friday last week, Barnes said. He is a student at Ely Elementary School, according to a statement posted Sunday on the Elyria City Health District's Web site.

Gov. Ted Strickland announced at a news conference Sunday that shipments of Tamiflu will arrive from the federal government this week, but only as a precaution in case the outbreak spreads.

The child displayed typical seasonal flu symptoms, including a sore throat and body aches, Jennings said. His family members are being tested for the disease, but they currently are in good health, Jennings said. He did not know if the child or his family had direct contact with pigs while they were in Mexico.

Health officials also are investigating four people in Wood County who traveled to Mexico and have similar flu symptoms.

City health officials have sent out an advisory to parents at Ely Elementary, and parents can call a phone bank with any questions regarding the illness.

A message left Sunday with the school was not immediately returned.

Symptoms of the swine flu virus closely resemble those of the seasonal flu and include fever, weakness, coughing and lack of appetite.

Federal health officials said Sunday that 20 cases of swine flu have been reported so far across the U.S. in New York, Ohio, Kansas, Texas and California. Patients have ranged in age from 9 to over 50. At least two were hospitalized. All recovered or are recovering.

Local Preparations

The Cincinnati Health Department is watching for local cases of swine flu and echoes the state health department’s call for serious preparation.

Local hospitals have been told what to look for and have been asked to test anyone with flu-like illnesses.

Dr. Steve Englender, of the Health Department, said experts think the world is “overdue” for a pandemic -- an illness that quickly spreads and causes large numbers of infections and large numbers of deaths.

Because this strain of swine flu is a new strain, it could be that bug.

"We have a brand new virus -- never been seen before -- that can infect people, and the public health medical concern is that if everyone is susceptible to this, this could, in fact, become the virus that causes the next pandemic," Englender said.

Health agents said that for now, the message is “be prepared.” However, if the swine flu does become a pandemic, it could put an enormous strain on several support systems.

Those include an enormous strain on healthcare facilities, and on businesses such as grocery stores and gas stations.

Englender recommends having up to two weeks of food and water, which will make it easier to cope with the worst-case scenario and the best move is to avoid getting sick.

"That's why we say cover your cough, cover your sneeze, wash your hands, if you're sick -- stay home. If you want to avoid or reduce your chances of becoming sick, avoid people who are ill," Englender said.

Hamilton County Commissioners will get an update on the local situation from the County Health Commissioner on Monday.

The conference will take place at 10 a.m. at the County Administration building.
