Trio Bandの秘密
本日は、かなりManiacなことを話しましょう。 60’sには、最小限の構成で音楽を演奏するTrio Bandが出てきた訳なのですが、筆頭に挙げられるのは、Cream,the Who,Jimi hendrix Experienceなんかだったのです。 さて、実は、見た目がTrio編成でも、楽器の役割が各bandともにまったく違うのです。この3つのBandがそれぞれの音楽性を象徴するように比較的分かりやすいのでここに列記しました。 まず、Creamですが、Guitar,Bass,Drumsの構成ですが、面白いのは全部がソロ楽器だということです。各楽器の演奏で影響を受けながら盛り上がっていくJazzの手法を取り入れた演奏だったために3人が楽器で喧嘩をしているような感じに聴こえたりします。 次のThe Whoは、実際は、4人組なのですが、演奏の主体は3人なのでTrioとしました。このBandの面白いのは、BassとDrumsがLead楽器で、GuitarがRhythm楽器に徹しているということでしょうか。 そして、Jimi Hendrix Experienceに至っては、GuitarとDrumがLead楽器で、BassがRhythm楽器に徹しているんですよね。こういうのは、Liveを注意深く観ていると音楽性も相まってその特徴がよく現れています。 ところで、 Creamは、盛り上がると全部の楽器が喧嘩状態になるし、The Whoは、お互いがかなりCoolながらDrumsが急に盛り上げっても、GuitarがしっかりとRhythmを担っている。Experienceは、GuitarとDrumsが相互に影響し合って盛り上がっても、Bassは独りCoolにRhythmを支えているんですよね。 一見同じように見えても、よく見ると個々の方法論がかいま見られるのが、60年代のRock音楽のすごいところです。 最近では、Drumsはrhythmで、Bassはその補完的役割、GuitarがLead楽器という固定観念ができてしまっているのですが、そういう位置づけを一度ぶっ壊してやると面白い音楽が生まれてくる余地がまだまだあるでしょう。 ただ、Trioの場合は各自の演奏能力が高くないと、かなり各個人に負担がかかるので消耗度が高いのが欠点です。それでも、やるなら、Trio編成でやりたいという人が多いというのも個々の腕前を存分に披露できる編成だから挑戦しがいがあるのです。そして何よりも、適度に空間が開いているので、音がぶつかり合いをそれほど気にせず演奏に集中できるという利点もあるんですよね。これに、Key Boardが入ってくるとかなりの制約も必然的に生まれてしまうので、空間を埋められる分各楽器の動きもこじんまりしてしまうようです。
