天路歴程275　これがそのお話です　This was the story.

さて、しばらくの後、リトルフェイスはわれにかえり、起き上がって、えっちらおっちらとその旅路についたのです。これがそのお話です。

天路歴程276　宝石をしまった所は捜れなかった　the place where his jewels were they never ransacked

ホウプフル　しかし、その連中は持っていたものをことごとくまきあげたのですか。

クリスチャン　いや、宝石をしまっておいたところはさぐられなかったので、それはまだ持っていました。

天路歴程277　善き人はその損失によってずいぶん悩まされました　the good man was much afflicted for his loss

しかし、お話したように、善き人はその損失によってずいぶん悩まされました。何しろ賊は当座の金の大部分を持っていったのですから。持っていかなかったのは（今も言いましたように）宝石で、また少しははした金が残っていましたけれども、到底旅を終るまでの路用には足りなかったのです。



but, as I was told, the good man was much afflicted for his loss, for the thieves got most of his spending money. That which they got not (as I said) were jewels; also he had a little odd money left, but scarce enough to bring him to his journey's end;

天路歴程278　宝石を売ることはできなかったからです　for his jewels he might not sell

それどころか、私の聞き違いでないとすれば、いのちをつなぐために、行く道で物乞いをしなければなりませんでした。宝石を売ることはできなかったからです。ただ物乞いをして、またできるかぎりのことをして、幾度か空腹をかかえながら、残りの道の大部分を行きました。



nay (if I was not misinformed), he was forced to beg as he went, to keep himself alive (for his jewels he might not sell). But beg, and do what he could, he went (as we say) "with many a hungry belly" the most part of the rest of the way.
