前述の日記の通り　今週のお題は　Liberty 「自由」でした

　英英辞書で調べると

　Liberty: the condition in which an individual has the ability
to act following his or her own will, with other words political freedom.

それぞれ個人が彼もしくは彼女自身の意思に従い行動を起こす
　権利をもっている状態　　　
　
　同義語として　freedom ですが
　political freedom がひっかかりました。

　political 一般的な意味では「政治的に」
　　ただ今回だと　「分別のある」　
　　　　という意味がふさわしいかな

また　こんな意味も
　liberty: behavior, which may not be approved

　　同意、承認を受けていないかもしれない行為

　そこから　こんな例題がありました。

　　I took of the liberty of using my friend's pencil.
　　「私は勝手に友達の鉛筆を使った」

　熟語表現
　take of the liberty: もしくは　take the liberty of　で
　「勝手に／大胆にも／　～する」

　The escaped prisoner is still at liberty.
「脱獄囚はいまだに逃走(意訳)中です」

　 at liberty 　「自由で／(拘束状態から)解放／釈放されて」

私が見つけた”liberty” の話題は　
　なんと自転車の発明にかかわるもの

　以下は　教科書の本文を多少アレンジしたもの

　 the coming of a bicycle that woman could ride freed them.
　　女性が乗れる自転車の登場は　彼女達を解放した

　The earlier type of a bicycle was so big that the women could
just take a ride around parks. But the new type of bicycle which
was similar to the present one was easy to ride and move around
more easily.

　初期のタイプは大き過ぎて女性が乗り廻れた範囲はせいぜい
　公園ぐらいでしたが、新しいタイプは乗るのも簡単になり
　また容易に動き回れるようになった

So the bicycle has brought women more feeling of liberty than
anything else in the world.

　自転車は世界中のどんなものよりも女性達に多大なる開放感を
　もたらした

Also the bicycle had a great effect on the way people chose
their partners.the bicycle gave the great liberty of choosing
their partners.

　また自転車は人々が結婚相手を選ぶ手段として多大な
　影響を与えた

？？　「なんじゃそりゃ？」ですが　理由は以下に

Because before the invention of the bicycle, most people
married people who lived with in ten miles of them.
The invention of the bicycle allowed people to meet partners
who lived over 100 miles. away.
　
　なぜなら自転車の発明以前は　自分の住居から
せいぜい10マイル(1.6キロ)範囲にすむ相手と結婚
していたが、

　自転車の発明が　100マイル(160キロ)離れた
相手との結婚も可能にした。


　「自転車で100マイルはそう簡単に往復できない」と
先生に反論をくらいましたが
　自転車って遠距離恋愛の友だったの？
