Globalization and Identity

It is of course not accidental that 'Identity' emerges as a central concept in this feild of study.
この研究分野で「アイデンティティ」が中心的コンセプトとしてあらわれるのは、もちろん偶然ではない。

As long as globalizaion is regarded as an overall process of uniformization, there is no need for such a concept, but as soon as this one-sided view is left behind, 'Identity' seems to become an inevitable analytical tool in oreder to grasp how globalization reinforces the production of cultural difference.
グローバリゼーションが概して一様化のプロセスとみなされている限り、そのような概念は必要ない。しかしこの偏った見方が時代遅れになるにつれて、「アイデンティティ」は、グローバリゼーションがどのように文化的差異を生み出す力になっているかを捉える際の避けがたい分析ツールとなるように思われる。

In the light of the preceding, however, it is also clear that there is good reason to exercise a certain caution.
前述の考え方にはしかしながら、ある注意を考慮するに十分な理由があることもまた明らかだ。

One problem is the double charge of the notion of identity.
一つの問題は、アイデンティティ概念の二重の負担にある。

It refers to people's attempts to 'fix the flow' and mark boundaries in the ongoing flux of globalization processes;
「流れの固定化」や、グロバリゼーションの過程で進行中の変化の中で境界線を定めるといった、人々の試みにそれは関係している。

but it relates as easily to the nostalgia of social scientists, and notably anthropologists, for the times when it still seemed possible to isolate bounded social formations---when theoretical concepts took the existence of boundaries for granted rather than questioning their, in many cases actually contested construction.
しかしそれは社会科学者のノスタルジアに容易に結びつく、特に人類学者に。
区切られた社会構造を孤立したものとして取り出すことがまだ可能だと思われるようなとき、
論理上の概念が、社会構造に異議を挟む実際上の数多くのケースで、境界の存在を疑問視するよりも当然のことと捉えるとき。

It is precisely this possible confusion between its discriptive and its analytic aspects that can make identity quite dangerous as a notion.
それはまさに、アイデンティティを概念としてきわめて危険なものにすることが可能な、その記述的、分析的側面の間で起こりうる混乱である。
