Earthquakes!
So I used to think this guy Art Bell was kind of strange...For those of you who don't know, he hosts a late night call in show over in the USA/Canada.He talked about "the quickening". Basically, this planet is heading somewhere - things are speeding up. While this theory could be applied to any number of things, he is talking mostly about the weather. He wrote this book that got adapted into the movie Day After Tomorrow. Other natural phenomenon he talks about include earthquakes.I have been thinking of calling in. This year has been ridiculous. Japan has gotten railed by typhoons and earthquakes. It actually started in 2003, and I thought it was bad then, but 2004 has been even worse. The local news throw "7 on the richter scale" around like it's a convenience store robbery: just another normal occurence. But the fact of the matter is these are serious quakes. Today I was sitting in Gusto (cheap eats) at about 11:15 with some friends. Football from the States was playing on the plasma screen, just like every Monday night. Suddenly white text flashes starts crawling across the top of the screen. I've seen it so many times. BEEP BEEP"NHK Weather Bulletin" (FLASHING)"There Was A Strong Earthquake in _______""Initial Magnitude 7.1""Affected Areas: ________ (M5+), ________ (M4), _______(M3)...""A Tsunami Warning Has Been Issued""Please Stay Away from All Coastal Areas"During late October and early November this happened almost daily. Niigata got shaken up really badly. Aftershocks were going on at all times of the day for several weeks. So finally when the barrage stops, we have another series of quakes in Hokkaido. Northern Japan in particular has been getting really beat up. Looking at the history of quakes in the region, it is far from normal. In October we saw the first bullet train derailment since the "safest trains in the world" were constructed back in 1964. Sure no one was injured, but many experts hammered the point that this bullet train was the safest in the country. Because the region where the derailment took place was prone to snowfall, special baracades were constructed around the tracks. Most of the major bullet train lines don't have these and a quake at any time, tomorrow or next year, could send one of the things flying into the Pacific. I guess wherever you go there is something to worry about. Here it's quakes and typhoons. Other places it might be crime or war. Japan has its advantages that is for sure. Let's just hope Beppu doesn't become another Pompeii.
