高木里代子のNY レポート⑥ 2024.06.13
Everyday in NY is full of new encounters and realizations.riyoko.jpSmalls jazz club has many free sessions on everyday weekend.I jumped in to some interesting sessions and giged with the musicians who I met for the first time, then after the sessions,we became friends..like this.Everyday new encounter creates some new encounters.Btw I’ve been to a few gigs and noticed something. The jazz session music which is often played is quite different that in Japan.Especially in Japan, old school jazz standards is often performed, like Cole Porter,George Gershwin,Duke Ellington etc.But here in NY,they seems to prefer songs like Cedar Walton,Joe Henderson,Wayne Shorter,Bennie Golson etc.Of course playing styles, rhythms, sound resonances are also different.I asked my senior musicians to teach me some songs like that. And trying to know and practice these songs which used to be not familiar to me.This realization was very new and interesting to me. So…me in these couple of days have begun to think and try to find something new, while practicing on the key with some new ideas, inspirations,New York-esque sounds that I met, remembering the many wonderful new sounds I heard during this trip…I think this kind of musical things is the most important stuffs that I really wanted to see abroad.
