I listened to the radio Korean course this morning.
In the course, there was a new word for me.
It was "chokki".(chokki in Japanese as well, vest in English)

I wasn't surprised that the word is the same in both Japanese and Korean,
because there are many words whose pronunciation and meaning
are the same in both languages.
Some of them come from Chinese, some come from English.
And some Korean words come from Japanese and vice versa.

I wondered where the word "chokki" comes from.
Is it originally a Japanese word or a Korean word?
It doesn't sound like English or Chinese, does it?
So I thought it is originally Japanese or Korean.

And I looked it up in my electronic dictionary and I was surprised.
First I used the Japanse-Japanese dictionary and it said 「チョッキ(jack)」.

JACK?

And then I looked up "jack" in the English-Japanese dictionary.
And I found out "jack" doesn't have the meaning "vest".

"chokki" comes from "jack".
But where does "jack" come from?

Tell me, Mr. Jack!




今朝ラジオで韓国語講座を聞きました。
そこではじめて知った単語がありました。
それは「chokki」（日本語でもチョッキですね。英語ではvest）

日本語と同じだからって、驚かないですよ。
だって日本語と韓国語で、同音同義語なんていくらでもありますから。
その中には、中国語から来た言葉、英語から来た言葉もあります。
また、日本語から韓国語に取り入れられた言葉もあるし、その逆もあります。

じゃあ、「チョッキ」って、もともと何語だろう？
日本語？それとも韓国語？
音的に、英語っぽくもないし、中国語っぽくもないから、
たぶん日本語か韓国語かなと思いました。

でも、電子辞書で調べてみて、驚きました。
最初、国語辞典で調べたのですが、「チョッキ(jack)」と書いてました。

JACK?

そのあと英和辞典で、"jack"を調べたら、
なんと「チョッキ（ベスト）」という意味はないんですね。

「チョッキ」は"jack"から来たようです。
じゃあ、"jack"は、どこから来たの？

教えて！ジャックさ～ん！！
