Affected Americans --the Obese --In the middle of last October, I traveled to the USA with wife after four years. The first destination was Red Top Farm in North Carolina where our friends(a senior retired couple) were living in the summer and fall season . They invited us to a gorgeous cottage in the farm where horses were grazing in the pastures. The farm is just in the south of Asheville locating close to the Great Smoky Mountains national park. We experienced a very comfortable and peacefull farm life staying there for 6 days with the friends. The second goal was Portland in Oregon where a friend had once strongly recommended to visit. In Portland I enjoyed dinnercruise, visiting Museums, joining bustours of the city and to the suburb, and shopping for tax-free. Portland is called "Rose City" and it is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA.Getting back to the subject, when it comes to the American Police-officer,it used to suggest us a fat and august image. The American friend told me that fat cops had been sent to the gym to work out to be slim, or had already been thrown out of duties for their dull competence. While I stayed in the US, I saw many super-fat people here and there. They were all extraordinary big ! This time I learned the word "Obese" from the friend that was symbolizing some aspect of serious social problems in the USA. I suppose ordinary people seem to refrain from calling them "Fat",instead they use "Obese" expressing "super-fat"medically or seriously. As I saw suchunusually fat and heavy people close to me so often, I tried to consider the problem.First, while I stayed in the US, what annoyed me most was too big meals.Actually it was very hard to find any small meals anywhere. Taking an example at a restaurant, as I found a small size salad and cup-soup in the menu, we ordered two cups of soup, one small salad and two main dishes. The volume of soup was fortunately moderate and good to us. When our waiter brought us two plates of salad,I told him that I had ordered only one small salad. To my surprise, the waiter kindly divided one small salad into two plates and served them, but it was full enough. So, If I ordered one ordinarysize salad, it was surely too big for us two. The main dish was ofcourse , super-big as I expected. We couldn't eat even its half amount. Then, I asked the waiter to bring a doggie-bag for our leftovers, telling him some excuse such that the taste of maindish was very good but it was too much for us.On the way back to the hotel, we happened to see some people just coming out of another restaurant, each carrying a doggie-bag. We exchanged "Cheers"raisin gour doggie-bags,shouting "our leftovers"each other.Next morning we ate the leftovers deliciously for breakfast at the hotelroom. Like this, any food in the US, including some junk-food wasabsolutely big and heavy. It was impossible for me to find any right sizedfood suitable to ordinary Japanese people. I'm afraid that who ever be able to cure the American people of their "Over-eating". I hope Japanese people should never follow such American Way of life. We never forget" Big easily goes to Ugly".
