(英文) "The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain"について
The movie "The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain" wasjust released yesterday, September 22nd, in Japan.Executive produced by Morgan Freeman and directed byDavid Midell, the film is based on a true story and recreates the actual elapsed time of the incident in therunning time. Kenneth Chamberlain, a 70-year-old black man andformer U.S. Marine Corps soldier who currently suffersfrom mental illness* and heart disease, tossed thependant onto the small table next to his bed whiledozing off in his sleep. The pendant collides with theemergency safety confirmation phone, causing the device to malfunction. It was 5:20am. The operatorasked the local police in charge to check on Mr.Chamberlain. Three police officers arrive at Mr.Chamberlain's apartment. ... The police officers, excited after a long exchangewith Mr. Chamberlain, finally smashed down thedoor and entered the room. They pushed Mr. Chamberlain, who was in a panic and did not understand what was going on, to thefloor and shot him dead with two shots. It was 7am. I don't explain the details of this movie. However, the scenario, cinematography, editing, music, and recording of this movie are trulyspectacular. The story (incident) unfolds in a smallspace in Mr.Chamberlain's apartment. The room isstubbornly closed with a steel door. Outside thatdoor, in front of the room at the top of the stairs.... It's just these two narrow spaces. The cameradid't move at all other than these two places. Youcould say it's a non-cinematic space, almost likea closed-door drama. Here, the movie progressesfor the same amount of time as the real event. Moreover, the threads of tension never break. I paid attention to the performance of the actorwho played the new police officer who is a formerjunior high school teacher. His understanding ofMr.Chamberlain, who suffers from a mental dis-order, and his thoughts on how to deal with thesituation stemming from his experience as ateacher are things that are happening in side ofhim, and in reality, all of his suggestions arebluntly rejected by his superiors, and the policeorganization He is ordered to behave like a new empolyee. ... A face that expresses human innerconflict. This is the physical expression of a manwho, as a rookie police officer, is unable to doanything as his hands and feet are constrainedby the orders of his superiors. His intellect andhuman emotions are nullified within the policefoece. ... This person probably embodies thecreative claims of this film. He's a great actorwho did that. Since the casts are modeled after personsinvolved in a real-life incident, so-called staractors do not appear in this film. When I say "a brilliant scenario" (by DavidMidell), I mean the sharp depiction of thecharactees, the sense of each word of thedialogue that is not wasted and never logical, the humanity of the characters...the level ofintelligence, it is packed full of psychologicalpathways for emotional expression, etc., andprovides a clear picture of each perspn'scharacter. What is interesting is that an organization'schain of command often reverses the "know-ledge" entrusted to manuals. In other words, the more faithful one is to one's duties, theless one's judgement of human naturebecomes flexible. "Knowledge" that isdocumented ina manual becomes nothingmore than a theoretical theory. When humanity is lost, orders from superiors andsubordinates become ruthless and cruel, andpeople fall into irredeemable mistakes. ... The scenario of this movie, and of coursethe visuals, perfectly depict these things. It isexploiting the problem of racial prejudice + α.【*Note】Mr. Chamberlain's mental disorder:Post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, fromthe war? In the movie, the term bipolardisorder is mentioned once by an emargencytelephone operator telling a police officer.Tadami Yamada
