If you know this or this going or returning

at the Checkpoint of Ōsaka
By Semimaru From "Ogura hyakunin Isshu"
(Translated by Tadami Yamada)
Maay 24th of the lunar calendar is said to be the an-
niversary of the death of
Semimaru (birth and death
unknown), who is known as a blind poet and a master
of
Biwa in the early
Heian period. In modern times, the
festival is held at
Sekisemimaru Shrin, which is located
at the site of
Seki (the old checkpoint) in Shimizu Town,
Otsu City, on June 24th, which is a month late.
Despite the
tanka poems recorded in the above-men-
tiond "
Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" and "
Gosen Wakashu" as
well as "
Shin Kokin Wakashu" and "
Shokukokin Waka-
shu", which were compiled by an emperor 's instruction,
the life of
Semimaru is probably legendary. Details are
unknown.
Noh play "
Semimaru ", which is said to be
Motomasa
Jūrō as the playwright, was based on the legend of
Semimaru, and is popular.
In addition, Akira Kurosawa's
"Ran" was adapted in to
a fictional story by adapting Shakespeare's "King Lear"
and Mori Motonari's "
Sanshi kyōkun jō (The Letter of
Lessons for Three Sons)", but Takeshi Nomura (current-
ly Mansai Nomura II) The blind and flute master
Tsuru-
maru was played by him was influenced by the legend
of
Semimaru. I think.
Next my
tanka poem to be posted below is an adap-
tation of Semimaru's
tanaka poem mentioned above ...
This is it, if I would go, I couldn't return,
farewell to life at the
Sanzugawabashi
where I can't see the shore
