私の実家の愛犬、テネシーはブリーダーさんから譲って頂いたシェルティーでした。
当時我が家の初代シェルティー、レックスを助骨癌で亡くした私達。
私の家族は完全なペットロス状態になってしまいした。
今、思えばそれだけレックスは家族の一員だったんだろうなぁ～
当初、もう二度と悲しい思いをしたくないのと両親も徐々に高齢化するという
現実に伴い、二度と犬は飼わないと言われてました。
そんなある日、妹がうちの近くに在住するシェルティーのブリダーさんを
見つけてきたのでした。
「とりあえず見るだけ！」ということでみんなでいそいそと出かけました。
そこで出会ったのが生後2ヶ月弱の3匹の子犬達。
体格の大きな子は前後の足が大きかったので、将来は標準サイズを
上回る大きさになるだろうとブリーダーさんに言われました。
一番小さな子は、ひょろひょろとしてちょっと病弱なカンジ。
そして、標準体格の普通っぽい子は好奇心旺盛でやんちゃ。
以前飼っていたレックスは、ラフコリーとよく間違われるぐらい
シェルティーにしては体格の大きな犬でした。
父と私は元々大型犬が好きなので、一番大きな子がいい！
と言っていたのですが...
妹と母は標準体格でやんちゃな子がいいと譲りません。
本当は「ただ見るだけ」だったはずなのに...（苦笑）
急遽その場で緊急家族会議。
結局、その日のうちに標準体格の子犬を引き取って帰ってきました。
それが今のテネシーです。
よくテネシーの名前の由来について、名曲「テネシーワルツ」の「テネシー」と
思われがちですが、実は全然違います。
テネシーの名前の由来は「Jack Daniels」という「Tennessee Whiskey」
から名付けられました。
実は「ジャック＝ダニエルズ」の製造の町、米国・Tennessee州にあるLynchburgに
昔、夏の家族旅行で訪れたという思い出があるのと、我が家は飲兵衛一家で
あることが名前の本当の由来です。（笑）


ブリーダーさんちから子犬を数日間だけ預かった時の様子。
テネシーもこの子犬ぐらいの頃から私達と生活してました。
This is a photo when we took care of the puppy for several days from our breeder.
Tennesses had been living with us, since he was as old as this puppy.

Our family dog, Tennessee, the Shetland sheepdog came from a breeder's home.
We had just lost our first and beloved family Sheltie, Rex because of rib cancer.
Everyone in our family was greiving from a pet loss.
I look back and think that he really was a part of our family.
My parents said that they will never take care of another dog because they don't want to go through this sad experience ever again and that they are
also getting too old to take care of any dogs.
Then one day, my little sister found a Sheltie breeder,
who lives close to our home.
So we all decided to visit the kennel, "just to look".
There we met 3 puppies, who were just less than 2 months old.
The big puppy had 4 big legs and was told, that he would grow up
to be a big Sheltie.
The small one seems very weak.
The basic size one was very active and had alots of curiosities.
My dad and I both like big dogs in general. So we wanted the big puppy.
But my little sister and my mom wanted the basic sized puppy.
Our purpose was just to visit and see the puppies.
But all of the sudden, we had an emergency family meeting.
And we decided to bring home the active puppy, which later became our Tennessee.
By the way, many thinks the name "Tennessee" came from a famous song called,
"Tennessee Waltz". But that's not true.
His name came from "Jack Daniel's Tennesse Whiskey".
We had some good memories of traveling to Lynchburg, Tennessee
in the U.S. on one of our family summer vacations.
It's a town that makes "Jack Daniels", the Tennesse Whiskey.
And my family loves to drink liquors, too.
