デス妻のエピソード118で、hysterectomy（子宮摘出(術)）が出て来ました。

ブリーが更生キャンプへアンドリューの様子を見に行った時に聞いた、別の母親たちの会話の中で使われていました。聞いているときは全然分からなかったんですが、スクリプトを読んでいて気づきました。

Woman: "Kids. Boy, if I knew then what I know now, I would've had that hysterectomy twenty years ago."
「ったく、子どもがこんな厄介なもんだって分かってたら、20年前に子宮取ってたよ」

この単語、最近、『The Joy of Vocabulary』というボキャビル本の"Cutting" Wordsのところで読んだばかりだったので、「お♪」と思いました。

A word ends in -ectomy if it describes the partial or complete "cutting out" of a part of the body. (-ec in Greek means "out.")

A gastrectomy is the surgical removal, or "cutting out," of all or part of the stomach.

A word ends in -tomy if it describes a "cutting," rather than a "cutting out."

A gastrotomy is a "cutting," or surgical incision, into the stomach.

-ectomy は、摘出で、-tomyは切除　らしいですね。
そう言えば、ロボトミー（lobotomy）のloboって何だろう・・と調べたら、ギリシャ語で葉（よう）だそうです。
ロボトミーで脳の葉(よう)の切開[切断]術。「カッコーの巣の上で」で初めて聞いた言葉でした。

この接尾辞は、ギリシャ語系の造語要素にくっつくので、
Removal of spleen は、 splenectomy　となるそう。
同様に、pneumonectomyは　肺全摘除術
