上級やohioさんの所で、最近 日本人と宗教のことを聞いたり読んだりしたので、JapanTimesのJapan's Shinto-Buddhist religious medleyが目に止まり、ちょっと目を通しました。
難しいので、内容が何となくしか分からなかったのですが、 This process played out in the divine realm, too, with certain Shinto gods coming to be seen as protectors of the Buddha. This act of kindness won him the name "Great Bodhisattva (Buddhist saint) Hachiman" in 781. この部分は「へー」と思い、Wikipediaで日本語で読んでしまいました。 八幡大菩薩って、そういうことだったんですね。 Most in Japan may know Buddhism has something to do with controlling lust and anger, and is associated with funerals and graves, while Shinto involves venerating nature, and weddings. But many people have trouble making theological distinctions between the two or even telling a Buddhist temple from a Shinto shrine. Buddhists believe a deep understanding of this is required to dispel the basic causes of suffering. Compassion for all sentient beings is another deeply held tenet. veneration *n. 尊敬, 崇敬; 尊敬[崇敬]の念 (reverence) (⇒awe SYN). ･be filled with veneration for… …に対して尊敬の念に満たされる. ･have [hold]…in veneration …を尊敬[崇拝]する. ･in veneration of the dead 死者に敬意を表して.
