Advice for troubles in home networking (1)
I work as a kind of network engineer, call at clients' home, and build network configuration to connect their PC to Internet. Technology has fully developed now, 100MB connection is quite common among Internet settings.but It is very often that after setting, the things seem to be quite different from what you expected. For example, as is often the case, the max speed in connection on your PC can be measured only 25MB! you must be dissapointed to know that. It's natural that you complain about it. Why does this case happen?Would ads make wrong statements about speed? or Would FTTH (Fiber To The Home) construction work be poor? The answers cannot easliy be found.Various factors may influence on your PC, but it doesn't matter to you, I think. It is the fact that you want to get higher speed that counts.I'm going to introduce some solutions to you.At first, let me divide the factors to slow down your PC connection into some categories. According to them, you need to check.A)Windows version☆Windows 95,98,98SE,Me are not good for broad band network connections. They have poor memory management, as well as less MTU processing(MTU means the max sending size of packet data unit, which decides transmitting speed), so they cannot process more than two programs at once. If you use Internet Explore (internet browsing application) and OE(mailing software), they wouldn't go together well. It would be better that you buy XP (as of Jan. 2005, it is the latest ver.)B)Adjusting MTU value☆If you are unable to set up XP on your PC, Adjusting MTU would be the desired solution. Sending packet size is usually set for OS to operate properly, but if the size is wrongly registered, as a result, OS would be slow in receiving packets. Then, what can we do? The free soft ware is available on the Internet. Search it on the web site, follow its guidance to set up. With keyword MTU, edit or something, you will easily find.C)interfaces☆In the internet connection, LAN interface is usually needed. If your PC is a desk top PC, it would have LAN board, it may be designed for 100MB connection, but it cannot exert the full potential, which is proved in some magazines. In fact, the speed would be about 25MB or more. So I highly recommend that you buy 1000GB (Giga bit) ethernet boad, as for me, the figure get about twice. It is quite easy for you, beginners to replace them.It can also be said about USB interface. Now we can use USB 1.0 and 2.0. You know, of course, the latter works faster. but I don't know whether USB 2.0 is designed for Giga bit connection. You need to confirm before you buy.So much, then for my advice vol.1. It will continue...
