Zeljko Lucic :Hello, Good evening. It's always good to be back.Margaret Juntwait: Congratulations last night!ZL : Thank you so much.MJ: How does it feel, production performance Rigoletto was so frightening. It was good, strong.ZL : Yes, I was really personally - as performer, but you know first run is always very depressing stressful you know everything comes superb you never thought you think about it but now in the ice broken now we can really relax and -- performance really really good show.MJ: How often do you sing the role? Do you do it a lot?ZL: Yes, I did a couple of productions already, different productions, I don't know how many performances but four or five each productions I will do new production here at the MET fortunately 2013 Rigoletto and Chicago, Munich, europe everywhere.MJ: It's a kind of role baritone all want to do, I mean they sort of wait their career to sing the role Rigoletto. lots of pressure on you? why you finally do it?ZL: --- but it depends everything you --MJ: Is that what you call MJ you have to re- on mind WB: OK talk about Rigoletto, a kind of baritone repertory, I put you on a talk before and ask you --to the rest of the career singin Rigoletto, what make I mean everyone makes new Rigoletto, ----ZL: ---- coloratura then dramatic, everything - "Cortigiani, (vil razza dannata)" "Pari siamo! " in almost any --MJ Rigoletto is a man who has very diffrent aspect for his life and they collide in a big tragedy his daughter dies, want aspect most? in playing this role which scene is more emotional for you? Cortigiani, (vil razza dannata)coming to the courtiers and - or when she dies?ZL : The last scene, I, very careful, take care I'm getting involved in notion and my voice is very very very depressing.MJ: You really broke my heart last night. because I gonna tell you why. I heard if he comes very emotional in between you singin phrases, I could hear you making -- you -- you were losing your daughter it was very very real!ZL: I'm terribly -- my life, everything goin on stage I put in myself, my private life, the situation, that's how I cry scream somebody like who I love so much.MJ: Gosh I can hear any practicly crying between - even in some line where rest of emotions sounds magnificent and beautiful.ZL: Thank you.MJ: Is there any chance you can call the - you have to be careful during when you singin last night.ZL: Yes, because I can lose my voice, then I scream or cry in the end but you know, but the final high note came, well, "la maledizione!" came after me, yeah, yes, - that's the curse, MJ: We're talking to baritone Zeljko Lucic currently singing the role of Rigoletto here at the Metropolitan Opera, and I called you earlier when you first arrived you know they say my first Macbeth, so I still hear the role of Macbeth whenever you sing anything Verdi, I think I hear those line of Macbeth in you and love you to do it again. Do you do that role?ZL: Yes, I'm doing that role but unfortunately not here, but I'm doing 2014 here. (?)MJ : Aha, let's speak about Rigoletto again, you so often sing the role of bad guys, and Rigoletto but,WB: It's baritone's job. (laughing)ZL: (laughing)hahaha, well!MJ: I mean Rigoletto is a good man who also has bad tised, complex character is that? you enjoying little more complex of the character?ZL: Yes, of course. Well, I'm in double personality. you know , I'm trying to be the part of, you know , involved but dramatized my feeling to people to my daughter, not always - war between in me in my curse-- (?)WB: Well, OK. What if he bad, if he good, if he villain, what do you want people to take away?ZL: Take it all. WB: Aha-ZL: All what he doing is up to, he's trying to beat somebody stronger people master nothing else. I was not -I don't want to be - when I was saying to Monterone when he comes, when I laugh at him, only because clowns around, all the people -- curse.(?)WB : When Rigoletto tells that nature of Mankind, "O uomini! O natura! (Vil scellerato mi faceste voi!) "You made me what I am." Where do you go with that lines? What do you feel like in drama?ZL: I'm angry truly angry that moment and yesterday I was pointing the audience afford not.WB : Yes, you were.ZL: I was pointing at the audience sitting there and "It's your fault!" Why I was angry? WB: Very scary?ZL: not me not my nature, you. MJ: Fabio Luisi is conducting.ZL: Yes, MJ: How do you like his conducting? I heard so many wonderful.ZL: Yes well we know each other very long. MJ: Really?ZL: Very long time. We did Rigoletto already. Trio, Diana Damrau, me and Maestro Luisi did Rigoletto already together in Germany. So our second Rigoletto together. We know each other perfectly we understand each other, so actually no problem really honest work.MJ: you talk about being father yourself, do you have a daughter?ZL: No, I have two sons.MJ: I heard you had teenage daughter you're probably not exactlyWB: later on I'm sure he can find some -MJ: you are trying to teach a kid who want to think on their own but just don't have capacity to do it yet.ZL: Yeah, yeah.MJ: That's exactly what taking place in MET opera,WB: we have tonight mother who has son remember Father and Mother's love, tomorrow night with Walkure, parenting we here at the MET.ZL: Yeah.(laughing)MJ: You sang the Count Luna in Trovatore, vocally how it's different from singing Rigoletto? You talked about the volume of Rigoletto?I mean both Verdi baritone roles.ZL: Yes, they are. But for me much easier sing Rigoletto than Luna**.MJ: How come, What?WB I've never heard it before.ZL: Yes it isWB OK radio audience you heard it you heard it here first OK, Telephone!ZL: Hahaha- well I always thought that Count Luna is the most difficult Verdi roles ever written.WB: Because of the aria.MJ: 'Il balen (del suo sorriso)' ?ZL: Because of the aria, maybe because of all focused a little bit up or upper, so it's the special big aria 'Il balen (del suo sorriso)' - it's really wonderful most difficult opera aria of baritone and not only that whole of the duet with soprano depresso everything what is Luna - WB: vocal range (?)ZL: No!WB: OK.ZL: Line line, none stopping, not ending line. Rigoletto is more -MJ: More sad?ZL: Sad? I would say more polite. more might that being me. I'm acting Luna, MJ: Ah,WB: Right.ZL: I'm acting Luna because I cannot transform myself to be Luna, I'm afraid but Rigoletto, Yes, I can.WB Rigoletto - like a - reflects your emotions ?ZL: Right.MJ: Talking about the practise, you sang a lot of - so heavy! here at the MET I mean you have done Macbeth done Traviata done Trovatore, Rigoletto, I think someday we need to find the character that you can play you have the straw hat not a pain, captain- ZL: Wowowow,(laughing) well I'm not quite sure but -WB Danilo in Merry Widow (Danilo Danilowitsch in Die lustige Witwe) ?ZL: Danilo? WB Don't you ever want to do something like -- crazy ?ZL: Never. I have no experience about in singing buffa role for or having whatever lieder concert, lieder-abend, no. my whole life is on stage of opera itself.MJ: You enjoy a good laugh, you are a fun guy! ZL: Yes I do!MJ: So you fun guy out on to the stage some for it? ZL: Maybe I'm bringing that funny guy between act I'm free, but no! MJ: You bring up to singing Enrico in Lucia di Lammemoor in Japan?ZL: Yeah.MJ: It's gonna be very emotional -, isn't it?ZL: Yes, it's going to be very emotional -. MJ: YeahZL: All these troubles ---MJ: I think bringing it to people in Japan, it's gonna be remarkable.ZL: Yeah.WB Yeah what a great honour to be able to sing for the people who need them, right?ZL: Yeah, yeah.
