 A Summary of an Article Titled "Courage Not to Have Any Excess Baggage Has Dignity " (「持たない勇気に品格」 日本経済新聞９月14日夕刊) Motoko Katakura used to live with Muslim nomads and learned a lot from them. We, Japanese people, take a rest because we worked hard and got tired, but they think leeway and relaxation is the most important thing in their lives. They work while being relaxed, for instance, composing poems, learning, praying, or chanting verse. They also believe that life is learning and that sleeping is as important as learning. In addition, they believe moving is a token of human being; while we are traveling, we can discover something and learn. In order to move, they think they shouldn’t have excess baggage. She says it is so hard that we need courage not to have any excess baggage. That is why she thinks such nomads’ philosophy has dignity as a way of living. Through observing their way of thinking or acting closely, she felt it is similar to Japanese one and it surprised her. We, Japanese people, also have “the philosophy of drifting”; we can easily recall famous drifters such as Saigyo, Basho, Santoka and so on. She realized even though there seems to be a big difference between cultures, some similar sense of value should underlie and people can empathize with each other. Empathizing and accepting differences in whole is the first step of cross-cultural understanding. As people have moved frequently, cultures have interchanged actively. Globalization should create mosaic pattern. From the historical point of view, the nations which had accepted different cultures got strong like Mongol, Ottoman Turks, Rome, Japan and former the U.S. It is important for us to respect diversity each other. She adds accepting aging is one of cross-cultural experiences. We should enjoy “cross-cultural phenomena” inside of ourselves because as we are aging, we are getting different kinds of beauty.
