It is often said that most things cannnot learned merely by watching and observing. For example, there is the often used statement about swimming: "You cannot learn to swim if you never jump into the pool." I would argue that a similar truth holds for learning a language because the best way to learn a language is to practice using it.

As a practicing art historian, however, I disagree with the supposed truth of this statement because most of the learning in art history takes place in observing works of arts.
