今回も、the gory details、 work one's fingers to the boneなど クリーシェ辞典に出ている言い回しがいろいろ出て来ました。

クリーシェ辞典には、他にも　proof of the pudding、water under the bridge、wash one's dirty linen in public、there's no such thing as a free lunch、in one ear and out the other、flesh and blood、with flying colors とか最近デス妻で見かけたフレーズ（そのバリエーション）が沢山あります。

walk in on Cobuildの定義が分かりやすかった。
If you walk in on someone, you enter the room that they are in while they are doing something private, and this creates an embarrassing situation.

受難; 精神的苦悩，試練. Calvaryは,カルバリの丘:キリストが十字架に掛けられた Jerusalem 付近の丘;ゴルゴタ(Golgotha)のラテン語名. / "What she didn’t know was.....the calvary was on its way..." [DH219]

吹き替えでは騎兵隊(cavalry)となっていました・・・(･･?)
あのシーンのEleanorのハイヒールのカツカツという音は、騎兵隊を思わせるものがありましたが。

１９世紀、イギリスやアメリカのお針子が、重労働を強いるsweat shoと呼ばれる工場で、「（低賃金で）指がだめになるまで働いた」ことからきた。いわば、西洋版女工哀史が生んだ表現である。通常、「だれそれのために（身を粉にして働く）」といった意味合いを伴い、他人のことについては同情の、自分のことについては不平の口調で使う。イメージとしては、主に女性について使う表現だが、男性に使ってもおかしくはない。Poor Mrs. Harris works her fingers to the bone to support her children, but they don't appreciate it.（かわいそうに、ハリスの奥さんは子どもたちを養うため身を粉にして働いているのに、どの子もそれを何とも思ってないんだ）。I work my fingers to the bone and what thanks do I get?（私が身を粉にして働いているのに、だれも何とも思ってくれないのさ）。［言い換え］work very hard
