昭和３０年代初頭の三輪車

ここに写っているのが十分かどうかは不明 I have a photo in which I was playing with kimono on. It was when I was three or four.In the picture above my brother or I (?) wore casual clothes. My village in the moutains seems to have been gradually influenced by modernization.In those days there were few bikes exclusively for children. I remember riding a big heavy bike with one foot on the left predal and the other on the right crossing through the frame. It looked like an acrobatics. That was a very common scene in the rural area.The brake of my father's bike sometimes went out. I usually ride on it. Sitting on the saddle, my feet was far away from the ground.One day, I was riding down along the steep road, at the end of which there was a sharp bend. The brake went out and I jumped off the bike by instinct. The bike broke into pieces in the river. If I had gone straight, I would have fallen into the river where there were full of rocks and died. In my rural life, I had same kind of incidents many times. Now they are memories.

昭和３０年代の農家

This is an old picture of my house where I was born about 50-60(?) years ago. As you can see, my family were farmers. This photo is in my mother's album, not well kept. My house was surrounded by paddy fields and stood just by the river. It was gone about 40 years ago because a dam was constructed. The ruin of my house is sometimes seen during a drought season. Looking back at my life, the building structures I got involved were all gone. My house was gone, my primary school gone, my junior high school rebuild, my senior high also rebuild, and my university byildings in Kyoto were gone. Now they became modern institutes.These days I often think Japanese people has lost a lot of old and good heritages which we can access easily. Under the name of modernization and convenience, we demolished everything old at hand.In many European countries, people have lived in the same houses for several hundreds years. They can see the same scenes that were centuries ago. Now it's time we rethink about what civilization means.

昭和４２年　中学卒業旅行で

昭和４２年　同級生と卒業旅行　　　着ている服装で年代がわかると思うが、今思うと女の子のほうが格段に服装に関してお洒落だった。というか、男は服装がどうのこうのなんて考えていない世代だった。写真中の友人が学生服を着ているように私も当然学生服を着ていた。家にあるのは学生服か体操服にわずかな普段着。外に出ていくのに格好をかまっているナンパな学生は私の周りにいなかった。私服を着て洋服のセンスに目覚め始めたのは大学に入学してからだった。It seems that girls become aware of their fashion much earlier than boys. About 40 years ago, early male teens didn't care what they wear. They didn't have wide variety of clothing, just one set of school uniforms and few casual wear.I'm surprised to see young kids, say, three-year-old kids, look happy in up-to-date fashions.

４０年前のわが町　山口県周南市（旧徳山市）

石油コンビナートで有名な周南市（旧徳山市）。後方の山裾は現在まったく違った風景になっている。当時市街地近辺の丘陵地はすべて開発されて、現在はほとんど宅地と道路網で埋め尽くされている。市の中心街は空洞化が激しく現在新たな活性策が練られているが、進展はほとんどない。当時作られた住宅地も高齢化が進んでいる。そういう我が家も宅地の高齢化に貢献しているのだが。あれだけ活気にあふれていた市が再び蘇るかどうか、さらに４,５０年後の写真を見たい。

（港に停泊するのは木造船ばかり。）　　Minolta SR1 Rokkor135 I wonder if we can say we have become rich. Especially in these days, the prices are going up and living standard seems to decline. Once we know the rich and convenient lives, we hardly stay away from them. Money has become happiness itself. Several decades ago, most of us were poor but happy. Having more didn't mean affluence. Happiness consisted in people's mind, not in materials.This is the time for us all to think about how our way of living should be.

昭和４７年　徳島市　祭りの衣装を着た老人

（どういう祭りだったかは覚えていない）　撮影機種も記憶にない写真の表現も様々に挑戦した。この徳島の衣装を着た人は顔も白塗りで化粧をしていた。この特徴を生かそうと思いっきりコントラストをつけて現像した。下宿の４畳半に現像液、停止液、定着液を並べて何回も露光時間を変えて印画紙に焼き付けた。（こんな薬品を下宿に持ち込むのは禁止されていたが、夜中に密かにやっていた）背景の処理が甘かったと今見るとわかる。

昭和４１年　給食風景

（１９６５年　中学での給食風景）たぶんこの写真は運動会の給食風景だと思う。私は写真部だったので大きな行事があるとカメラを持って自由に撮ることが許されていた。中学時代の数少ないカラー写真の１枚である。フィルム１本1000円ぐらい、現像料が今のＬ判ぐらいの大きさが１枚120円ぐらいだったと思う。かなりの貴重品だった。牛乳が出るのはこうした特別な行事の時だけで、ふつうは脱脂粉乳だった。これに果物かフルーツポンチがついていた気がする。普段の給食では、噛みきれない肉やひどくまずいわけのわからない料理にたびたび悩まされた。いまはいい思い出になっているが。

クラスメート

（クラスメート　１９６５年）　Minolta V2 This is the photo I took in the third grade at junior high, in 1965. It was more than 40 years ago. I was a member of the photo club and could enjoy free activity with my camera on special occasions like Sports Day or school festival.As you can see, the window panes were made of wood. Those desks and chairs were just introduced to our school,but floors were wooden. The enrollment number of a class was about 50. Influenced by materialized society in which I grew up, I sometimes classify people as rich people or average, even poor. I know this kind of classification should not be adopted. But we have to look at the reality.In my school days, including junior high and even senior high school days, however, I never thought who were rich and who were poor. I didn't have such values. It probably came from my blindness, that is, I was as green as grass.

昭和４１年　奈良　修学旅行で

（昭和４１年　中３修学旅行　　奈良公園） Minolta V2 中３の修学旅行。普段は使ったことのないカラーフィルムを持っていった。自分で写したカラー写真はこの時が初めてだと思う。写真の中の観光バスにも郷愁を感じるけれども、何よりもカラー写真を初めて撮ったという記憶のほうがはるかに大きい。今ではデジタル専用で写真をやっているのを思うと隔世の感がある。この40年間で写真は大きく変わってしまった。

中学時代の写真

私が中学1年の時。郷土研究部に入っていた。山間のダムを見学に行った時顧問の先生が撮った写真。先生が誰だったか、後ろにいる先輩の女子たちのことも全く記憶にない。当時中学校には生徒があふれていた。１クラス５０人以上で、私は１年１３組だった。１学年６５０人以上はいたことになる。私が鈍感だったのか、イジメなどという言葉はなかった。今にして思えば、私はひどく小柄でガリガリで、いじめられっこだったように思うが、自分がいじめられているという意識はさらさらなかった。思い返すとあの当時、見かけとは裏腹にひどく好奇心が強く、どこでも首を突っ込むところがあった。その性格はなかなか治らないものらしい。

昭和４７年　輪島市近郊

（能登半島、輪島市近郊） People go for a trip for several reasons. In my younger days, I often travel for the purpose of meeting local people. I was ready to talk to strangers sitting next to me in the trains and buses.People who wanted to travel alone looking for meditation might have felt I was annoying. Anyway as for me, talking was one of the best pleasures during the trip.Deeply influenced by a photographer Moriyama Daizo（森山大道）, I also liked to express the atmosphere on certain occasion. I don't remember what I wanted to describe in the picture above. There seems nothing worth artistic in it. I might have felt something at the spot.

写真で何を表現するか

（昭和４７年　道路に座って駄々をこねる子） This is my opinion. Young photographers tend to express their imagined scenery in photography.They usually don't pursue the beauty of a subject. They don't express the character, thought, and belief of another people.Their main purpose of photogrphy seems to express their own mind, feeling, and perception. I don't disagree with young people in the attitude of photography. When young, I also wanted to express my perception through photography like the picture above.Photography is a form of art, which means any approach should be free. What matters is how other people look and feel it.

昭和４８年　尾岱沼

（昭和４８年　北海道　尾岱沼） Big trees were all dead in Odaito, Hokkaido and it looked as if it was a foreign country. I have only one experience of traveling abroaod, Hawaii, but it was not a sightseeing tour but a training session as a tour guide.Seeing strange sights and encoutering unknown world surely inspires our motivation for learning not only specific school subjects but also every category of arts. If I had enough money and time, I woould be ready to leave Japan. So far, it's a impossible dream. I'm full to carry out everyday's routine work, teaching students, English translations, and etc.

昭和３０年代の農村風景

（昭和３０年代。馬で田圃を耕している。父親撮影）私が写真を始めたのは中学２年。当時親父のカメラを使っていたので上の写真も親父のカメラなのだろう。機種は minolta V2 と書いてあったと思う。当時としてはかなり貴重なものだったのだろう。このカメラをかなり長い間使っていた。大学時代にアルバイトでためたお金でカメラを４,５台集めた。6×6判サイズから小型の16ｍｍくらいのサイズまで持っていた。今から考えると非常にもったいないことをしたと思うのだが、大学卒業時にほとんどを売ってしまった。実際の話、質で流れた。今持っているといい財産になっていると思うのだが、あとの祭り！！

昭和３０年代　山村風景

（オート三輪でタケノコを集荷する季節、父撮影）When bamboo shoots came out, almost all the villagers dug them and carried them to one place. Brokers drove to our vilage by their three-wheel automobiles from " far away" towm. In those days, just 10 km was a long distance because there were few means of transportation. Mountains and fields were main play area for children. We knew where to get good berries and nuts. Cinnamon was one of our favorite snacks. We ate the barks and roots of a cinnamon tree. To get very young bamboo shoots, which were soft and good flavor, we all climed up and down steep hills all day long. It made us tough.

私の生まれた田舎

（私の姿からすると昭和32、3年ころの山村:父親が撮影）caplioでアルバムを撮影、無修正 In the course of looking back my old photoes, I felt like go further back to old ages when I lived in a village.In 1950's, farmers were majority and took a village life for granted. Now my birthplace which you can see above is gone, that is, under the water of a dam. Sometimes I can see the ruins of my village when water shortage happens.The biggest house you can see in the picture above was my home. Just below my house, there used to be a stream where my family used its water for washing vegetables, sometimes clothes and young kids swam there in the summer. I remember almost drowning at the deep spot. In those days, the matter of dead or alive was at hand for everyone. A truck with four wheels was not common in a remote area of the village, therefore, once it came to my village, it was a big attraction for young kids. That's why you can see a lot of kids surounding the truck.Incidentally, the truck didn't have a steering wheel, but a steering bar. Elderly people probably know it.

昭和４８年　襟裳岬付近

Photography is a part of my lifestyle.In my young days, I never imagined such daily habit because films were so expensive. In a sense color films were considered luxurios goods that few people could afford. That's why people used color films only on special occasions. Now people enjoy digital cameras on daily bases. Taking photoes has become relatively cheap hobby. The performances of cameras are getting more advanced and sophisticated.Everyone can get clear pictures by using up-to-date technology. Shooting casual photoes of our lovey babies and young kids doesn't require special skills.Some photogrphers are now turning to vague pictures instead of clear vision. Out-of-focus pictues inspire people more imagination. I think imagination is one of many things that we have lost at the sacrifice of getting convenience and high-tech gadgets.

昭和４８年　北海道　場所不明

（　昭和４８年　北海道のどこかの駅。記憶はない）Traveling was the purpose of my life in my student days. I made a trip to almost everywhere in Japan. Now I'm looking for the pictures I took in those days.Photoes are invaluable not only because they remind me of my young days, but because they are the precious data that can compare with the scenery and people of today.It is not until recently that I realize the significance of the data in old photoes. Probably that's because I get old, I mean I'm old enough to notice the value of the past.

４８年襟裳岬にて

（昭和４８年当時の襟裳岬。道路もあまり舗装されていなかった気がする） I don't like looking back to my past and indulging in nostalgia. I think I'm not so old.The purpose on which I put my old photoes on the blog site is compare the past with the present. About 40 years ago there used to be more nature; I mean Japan was still one of developing countries.Now in urban area, there's a campaign to go back to "nature" and people try to restore the natural streams and forests in the area once destroyed under the name of Reconstruction（日本列島改造）.It is not until after we destroy nature that we realize the value of it. To our regret, things once demolished will never recover. All we have to do is just make efforts to reproduce them.

昭和４８年　襟裳岬にて

（昭和４８年　若者でにぎわう襟裳岬）In those days, people who traveled all over Japan were mainly young people. They stayed at "youth hostels" with little money in their pockets.One of the reason to make a trip for them was meeting other young people. Conversation among them was very pleasant opportunity.Now people traveling around sightseeing spots seem to be mainly elderly people. They enjoy hot spas and delicious food at any place. Where are young people? I don't want to say like this; they enjoy TV games at home or indlge in their own world.

There's a limit we can see even in our hometown. 昭和４４年　モデル撮影会

（私が高校生の時、近くの公園でモデルの撮影会があった。）（モデルは３名。右側は当時のアイドル榊原いくえさん。自分で現像したため一部薬品で変色している）I started photography at the age of 14. I used my father's camera. In those days cameras were very expensive, but don't think me I was rich. My friend invited me to the photography club in the junior high school. I liked machinery.In my senior high school days, I got a kit of developing pictures. Considering my family's econimic situation, I asked my parents too much.Anyway, I often went into the developing room at the senior high and put a lot of photoes on exbitions. I indulged in photography instead of studying for higher education.There was an atomosphere in which such freedom of life style was permissive.

昭和４８年　札幌ビール工場にて

（できあがった製品のチェックをこんな風にしていました） Photography used to be a luxurious hobby decades ago. With the appearence of digital cameras, it became pretty unexpensive entertainment.Everyone can use digital cameras or cell phones with a camera easily. They contribute the widespread of the joy of photography.Pictures taken by digital camera don't have to be developed. They can be displayed on the computer screen immediately. If we don't like one of the shots, we can delete it.The pictures stored in the form of digital data will never change colors. As long as the harddisk works well, the data will stay forever ( I'm not sure).There are many advantages about digital cameras. These days, however, there is a backlash against digital world. Some photographers are going back to film cameras. And out-of-focus cameras are becoming more popular among young people.Holga is one of them. This brand is published by Kodak Film. Its ambiguity arouses imagination. Many people are too much spoiled on clear pictures on TV, computer screen, and in many magazines.Remember that crisp pictures don't shows what they really are. Pictures are art by photograophers. They can distort the reality very easily. Don't believe in what you see in the brilliant photoes. It shows only one segment of the subject.Please look at photoes with the idea that they are art.

（襟裳岬　当時の自分の感性がよみがえる） Although a photographer gets a picture of a specific object, he expresses himself by means of pictures.Suppose he is pursuing a brilliant sight of the sunset. Virtually he chooses the angle and timing with the best setting of his camera. And he can get a satisfactory shot. He may be proud of himself.People admire his great ability to get the picture. At that time people are attracted by his artistic sense through the picture. People can also feel the brilliance that he can feel.Through photogrphy, in a very real sense, people look at the photogrpher's mind. Looking at the picture above, can you imagine what I had in mind?

昭和４７年　徳島市にて

（昭和４７年徳島　真夏） Recently I take photoes of mainly flowers, birds, and landscapes. There's a reason why I hesitate to take snap shots of people.When I enter a photo contest, the organizer or companies make sure that an exhibitor should obtain the agreement of the person who are taken. It is the matter of what we call " right of portrait".I understand the feeling of the person photogrphed against his/her will. Some people don't want to be taken any portrait. I'm one of them. I like photogrphy but I don't like to be taken. When young, I liked taking people. People were good objects. The figures and expressions of people vary a lot. Nothing was (is) more attractive and appealing than people themselves. Now I have to get agrement of a person when I want to take his/her snap shots. To get agreement, I have to communicate with him/her and let the atmosphere more natural.

昭和４８年　礼文島　香深港

（当時のフェリーボート。　旅心を誘う）In 1970's a great many young people enjoyed traveling all around Japan. The means of transportation was mainly railway.We took about 20 hours to reach Aomori by way of Japan Sea lines. Nobody thought it a waste of time, rather preferred choosing time-consuming trips.I don't remember the exact hours to get to Rebun Island from Kyoto where I lived at that time. Probably it took at least two days. Rebun Island was such a far away place. We felt as if we were at the end of the earth.

昭和４８年　阿寒湖遊覧船

（昭和４８年　阿寒湖遊覧船にて） Some people misunderstand that photoes show us everything of the reality. But the idea is wrong.Photograhy is a form of art. It's the art that a photographer can convey his idea through his perspective. They can be distorted intentionally by the photographer.Believability depends on how the photographer takes a scene out of a whole sight. If he wants to hide a dark side of the reality, he has only to exclude the dark side. In newspapers and on TV, pictures are used to imform the reality and truth. They are very helpful to understand what is going on globally. In this high-tech age, however, images are easily modified or changed favorably to the photographers and even mass medias.

昭和４７年　臼杵の石仏

（昭和４７年当時の石仏群　　簡単な屋根があっただけ）There's something on Buddha statues that attracts me. I like their benevolent smiling faces. They appears to accept everything with generocity.Living in Kyoto in my school days, I visited a lot of old temples not only in Kyoto but also in other prefectures.Temples in Kyoto have sophisticated beauty and sublimity. But some deserted temples and Buddha statues in the countryside have another appal.There's an evidence that some local people are taking good care of those Buddha statues. Local residents pray for them and serve some sweets and flowers. Buddha statues have long been worshiped and became symbols for its climate and people who lived there long, long time ago.

昭和４８年　ニセコ駅？

（ニセコあたりの駅。記憶が定かでない。ＳＬが走っていた） I rarely used color films during Hokkaidop trip. I remember using about 20 films, all black and white ones. And I developed them by myself. The smell of the chemicals used for developing photoes filled in a small room. Probably such chemicals were forbidden in the boarding rooms, therefore I developed photoes late at night when the owner of the rooms was sleeping. Old photoes often changed colors including black-and-white pictures. Very strangely, I found the photoes printed at a photo shop much more turned their color than those I did myself.I once heard the same story from a photographer. I wonder what made those difference.

昭和４９年京都　葵祭

（上賀茂神社　　　　ｍｉｎｏｌｔａの16ｍｍフイルムカメラ使用）When I started my student life in Kyoto, everything was new and sophisticated bacuase I had long lived in the western edge of Honshu,　I mean, a remote area away from civilization. At that time, there was no Shinkansen line to my prefecture. It took about 8-9 hours by a super express. Coming back home meant leaving away from the civilization.

昭和４８年　宗谷岬

（北の果て　宗谷岬　今もこんなに賑わっているのだろうか） Looking at the fashion above brought me to the old days. During the trip in Hokkaido,　we often sang popular songs in those times like Siretoko Ryojo（知床旅情）, Misakimeguri （岬めぐり）, and many other folk songs.Folk songs were closely associatyed with the lives of young people, especially for university students. I remember going to the outdoor concert in Maruyama Park,Kyoto, where the place was so crowded with the students that I could hardly see the singers.

昭和４６年　山陰にて

（山陰地方のどこか。車窓の光景） Organizing the old photoes, I'm thinking about the times when I was young. Photo is a kind of medium to remind me of my younger days.This snap shot reminds me of the photogrphy books I read forty years ago. This one was influenced by a photogrpher Moriyama Daizo（森山大道）.When people are young, they are easily influenced by someone who is respectable. My mind was, even now, swinging from one hero to another. However, it can be said that it's a privilege of youth.

昭和４６年　京都

（昭和４６年　京都　平安神宮にて） I think Kyoto is my second hometown, because I spend five years as a university student and a freshman at a company. I those days, initial salary of university graduate was averagely 60,000 - 70,000 yen a month. I was sent money for living by my parents. It was 30,000 yen a month. I think it was a burden for them to send such money. I thought I had to pay back in the way they would feel their choice was right. Many years passed since then but I haven't been a good son. Beside getting living expense from my parents, I earned quite a little money by part-time jobs. The money sometimes amounted to 80,000 yen, so my school life was satisfactory. I mean, the life outside the university was fulfilling. I could not proud of my rich school days. When I entered a company, things didn't go well as I had expected because the small salary didn't maintain my life.（大徳寺大仙院）Anyway I could enjoy school days in Kyoto, where many famous sightseeing spots and historical site. As I had enough spare time, I went around Kyoto taking a lot of photos. My friend sharing the room was familiar to the knowledge about Japanese traditional gardens. Visiting many gardens of temples and shrines, I also got interested in old gardens. And I was once crazed on Buddhism statues. I rode my bike to Nara for three hours in order to take a look at Yakushi Nyorai （薬師如来）at Toshodaiji., because I was impressed with the photos by Domon Ken （土門　拳）.

（昭和４８年　北海道、礼文島桃岩）I think this site has not changed much. Down this hill, there was a beach where we could pick up agates （メノウ）all around. Probably too many people picked them up and they were gone long ago.

昭和４８年　網走刑務所

（映画の影響なのか当時網走刑務所跡地は人気スポットだった） For twenty days my friends and I made a trip all around Hokkaido. I remember visiting this site on tenth day. We slept at night in a rental car. This snap shot was taken the next morning.In those day, probably same as nowadays, young people were easy to talk with other age groups and made friends temporarily. Traveling had a good opportunities for us to share the time. I don't know if this site remains as it was 35 years ago. Almost every popular site has been changed into a sophisticated sightseeing attraction. What has become of this place?

昭和４６年　倉敷

（昭和４６年倉敷　　　　　　　　　ｍｉｎｏｌｔａ） Kurashiki was getting popular around 1970's but still was not visited by so many people like nowadays. This famous area remained, I think, what it was a century ago.There were few sophisticated souvenior shops for young people. The scence you can see above doesn't seem so much changed compared to that these days.However, the district where you turn left at the end of this street(above), appears almost completely transformed into "Harajuku-like" street with a smart atomosphere. This is my impression. The definition of "Japanese scene" is gradually changing into Westernized sophisticated scene with Japanese flavors.

知床半島・羅臼町　（昭和４８年）

　　　　昔のアルバムを整理しています。（昭和４８年知床羅臼町） It was in 1973 (昭和４８年) that I visited Rausu（羅臼) with my friends. In those days a song ”知床旅情" was very popular. Attracted by the song, many people traveled to Shiretoko in Hokkaido. I was among them.During the summer vacation, the small town was crowded with university students and young people carrying heavy backpacks. Staying at Youth Hostels scattered all around Hokkaido, we went around Hokkaido for twenty days. Sometimes we spend the nights in the waiting room at alocal stations. It was a very exciting trip with a little money. At every sightseeing spot, we met other people and enjoyed talking and made friends with them.

昭和４８年　旭川駅

（昭和４８年　北海道・旭川駅で撮影　カメラ：Nikomat） I started photography in my junior high school. My friend was a member of photography club and invited me to join in the club. That's the first time I touched cameras.Those days there were many camera manufacturers; Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Pentax, Topcon, Petri, Olympus, etc. Of course they were all film cameras.In late 1960's, color films became widespread but the price for one color film (for 36 picturs) was about 1000 yen. Printings cost about 100 yen per one picture.I remember using the high quality color film " Ektachrome" made by Kodak. Unlike digital cameras, I had to be very careful in taking photoes because each shot was valuable and could not be deleted.
