Improvisation is a process of self-discovery and revelation. It’s about ecstasy, not greed; heart, not attitude; musical validity, not race; inclusion, not regression; struggle, not coasting; content, not virtuosity; practice, not theory; risk, not safety; motion, not stagnation; original voices, not mimicry.”Keith Jarrett“The Virtual Jazz Age: A Survival Manual,” Musician 208 (March 1996): 36"Playing free involves a tremendous amount of preparation. If you persist, you reach a point where you give up a personal investment in how you sound??how good you are or how bad you are, in what you personally have to say, in what you think you should do??and simply listen. That is the moment of the beginning of freedom. This opens up a huge space, because then, in a sense, you are out of the way. You don’t forget everything you learned. It’s just there. The essence of free playing doesn’t distinguish between forms, whether it’s so called ‘free jazz’ or standards or anything. It’s just free to play."Gary Peacock“Keith Jarrett: Acoustic Pianist of the Year” interview by Ted Panken, Down Beat 68 (December 2001) 38-39.In formulating my style, I was very analytical. For every note I play, I have a very precise principle and theoretical reason. . . . I have been very conscious of taking everything apart in order to understand it as completely as I can.Bill Evans, “Bill Evans Talking,” interview by Les Tomkins, Crescendo International 14 (May 1976): 8.
