• 天路歴程594　元気ｦ出ｼﾅｻｲｲｴｽｷﾘｽﾄｶﾊｱﾅﾀｦ健ﾔｶﾆｼﾏｽ　"Be of good cheer, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole "

    　すると、私は夢の中でクリスチャンが暫く黙っているのを見た。それに対してホウプフルはこの言葉を付け加えた。「元気を出してください。イエス･キリストはあなたを健やかにしてくださいます。」 Then I saw in my dream that CHRISTIAN was as in a muse awhile, to whom also HOPEFUL added this word, "Be of good cheer, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole "; 矢内原忠雄著「余の尊敬する人物　新渡戸稲造」１９６ページより　縦の関係において「かなしみ」の心を養うべきことを教えた先生は、横の関係においては「チヤフル」（"Cheerful"）ということを力説しました。これは快活とか明朗とかいうに近い意味ですが、日本語をもってこの語の意味を完全に現すことができないために、先生はしばしば英語のままこの語を用いました。日本人は・・・自己の殻に閉じこもり、他人に対しては常に城壁を設けたような警戒的態度を取るか、然らずんば我関せずの態度を以て生活している。この弊風を棄てて、チヤフルな態度、チヤフルな顔つきをもって人に接し、見ず知らずの人に対しても、少しの親切でもしてあげるという心もちで暮らせば、社会はどれだけ温くなるかもしれない。まただんだん外国人との交際も多くなるに従い、日本国民がチヤフルな生活態度をもつことは一層必要になる、それが日本に対する外国人の誤解を除き、日本の国際的地位江お高める途（みち）である、というのが先生の考えであります。・・・・・・先生は「汝ら互いに愛せよ」という教えをば、概念的ではなく、すこぶる実際的に、高遠なる意味においてではなくきわめて卑近に、日本の民衆のわかる程度にて教えたのです。
