    589　ホウプフルは、そのために、ここでその兄弟の頭を水の上に持ち上げるためにずいぶん骨を折った。それどころか、時にはすっかり沈んでしまい、やがてまた、半ば死んだようになって浮き上がってくるのであった。 HOPEFUL, therefore, here had much ado to keep his brother's head above water; yea, sometimes he would be quite gone down, and then ere awhile he would rise up again half dead.

   559　ここでは、その国の住民が二人をとなえて「聖なる民、主にあがなわれたる者、もとめ尋ねらるるもの、云々」といった。 Here all the inhabitants of the country called them "The holy people; the redeemed of the Lord;" "Sought out," etc. Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people. Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. • 読書会を開催した　その４　グロスターにおけるSaying（神の約束）体験

  読書会では、3人で「米欧留学篇」の内村鑑三のエルウィンの日記と手紙及び「How I became a Christian」の第7章の最後の部分と第8章を新たに配って、最初の部分の邦訳のみ輪読した。内村鑑三の新島襄との出会いとグロスターでのＳＡＹＩＮＧ体験については以前、原稿段階で校正も兼ねて輪読したことがあり、省略したが、時系列に新島襄と広井勇（明確な日付がないので推定になるが）への手紙の輪読も必要かもしれない。次の読書会までにテキスト作成をやってみよう。グロスターでのセイイング（ＳＡＹＩＮＧ）体験については、米欧留学篇のナビ（４０ページ）でも一項目建てた重要なところであるが、本日掲げた天路歴程の　ＳＡＹＩＮＧ　に触発されてここで掲出してみよう。 　  ９　グロスターにおけるSaying（神の約束）体験内村鑑三のグロスターでの体験に最初に注目されたのは、同志社のオーテス・ケーリ（Otis Cary）教授である。「新島襄と内村鑑三とアーモスト大学」（文化学年報九（昭和三四年一二月二〇日同志社大学）は新島の英文日記、一八八五年五月七日（木）の記述から始まる。「雨。〔ジョンズ･ホプキンス大学の〕ギルマン学長が小礼拝堂での朝の祈祷会に出席する日であった。彼は祈りを少し読み上げてから、主の祈りを繰返した。出席の学生は僅かに三人。何と少ないことか。宗教的影響はきわめて強いものでありうるのに〔以上英文〕。新島襄は一八八四年から一八八五年にかけての世界一周旅行の途上、アメリカを旅行していた際に、ジョンズ・ホプキンス大学での彼の経験を、英語でつけていた彼の日記に記している。太田（後の新渡戸）稲造は同大学で勉強中であったが、そのできあがった大学に、新島を案内してまわった」。ケーリ教授は、新島が日本を脱出した目的は、「聖書を日本語に翻訳する為に、十分に英語を身につけることであった」とする。また、アマスト大学の設立の由来とシーリー総長の果たした役割について述べる。新島、内村にとって「シーリーの存在は決定的な要素であった。彼等がひとたびキリスト教の真理を受け入れている以上、彼の聖人のような、権威ある性格が彼等の必要とするすべてのことに答え」たとし、教授は「キリストにあって自由」の考え方の源流をアモスト大学にあるとする。そして新渡戸の英語の日記と、新島・内村往復書簡によると、一八八五年の春から夏にかけて内村がアマストに行く決断をすることになったことが解るとされた。一八八五年の夏、内村はアマストに行き、続いて神学校に行って、｢直接の」伝道に入るべきか、ペンシルベニアの医学部へ行って「間接の」伝道に入るべきかというジレンマに悩んでいた。「彼はエルウィンを去り、約三週間をグロスターで過し、かの地で彼は海、自然、神にみまもられて自分の心を鎮め、平安を見出し、アマストへ行って『直接の』伝道へ入るべき決断をなしたのである」と。ケーリ教授は、新渡戸が新島に内村のこと、彼の「憂うつな」状態のことを相談しなかったら、新島が伝道者的な熱心さで、すぐフィラデルフィアまでかけつけなかったら、内村の後の備えも体験も大変違ったものになっていただろうとされ、「決断の夏」とされた。内村は七月六日付の手紙で「もし先生がアマストを出発される前に、少しでも取りきめをしておいて下されば有難い」（If you be so kind as to make a little arrangement in Amherst before you leave there, I shall be under your greatest obligation.）と、アマスト大学入学の条件整備を頼む。八月十日付グロスターよりの手紙には「八日間聖霊の降臨を求め、熱心に祈り続けた。そして祈りは聞かれた」「父なる神は決して我らを一人に捨て置きません」。新島からの手紙を持ち、大波がうねり寄せる海辺に出て、大声で読み、手紙に伏して泣き、感謝して祈った。その時「神の恵みが私の上にそそがれ」「大洋のように広く、巌のように堅い神の約束が告げられた」「善き父は、一人神とあって満足すべし」と告げた。「アマストへ行き、福音の伝道師になりたいと長い間抱いていた意図を実現するつもりです」と語る。グロスターで内村が聞いた「神の約束」とは何か。内村は「伊藤一隆を葬るの辞」で、「私どもの青年時代よりの習慣として、神聖なる場合には英語を用いるを常としました」と語る。「米国の夏」グロスターの夏において英語で記した言葉がそれであろう。「Saying "Man is distant, but God is near"」。「人は離れても、神は近くにいる」。内村は「余の人生観はこの時より全く一変せり」と述べる（全集７p.237）。内村はこの時から常に自分は神と共にあると信じた。帰国後の不敬事件など様々な苦難の時にあっても、神と共に堅く立って揺らぐことがない。それはエルウィンからアマストに転じるグロスターでの夏のSayingの体験にあるのではないだろうか。

    558　ここで、二人は都からの声、大きな声が「なんじ、シオンのむすめに言え、みよ、なんじの救いきたる！みよ、その報いは彼とともにあり」と、言うのを聞いた。 Here they heard voices from out of the City, loud voices, saying, "Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him."
